I have been less than 100% committed to hiking the PCT again in 2017 – So many things going on with the business, personal life, health issues, and so on. I had planned to be a month into training by now, which hasn’t happened, and now any training I do will be pretty chilly, but that’s good I suppose.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to get to hike in 2017 or not – would the business require me to hold off? Would finances be just too difficult? A million possible things could get in the way, if I choose to let them. But, I still miss the trail, the PCT and I still have unfinished business, and a huge part of me cannot wait to get back out there.
For the last few months I have been reviewing my gear, my actual experiences on the PCT 2016, and looking at better or alternative (read ‘lighter’) gear choices. I bought some things, others I put on a Christmas wish list. One thing I do love is looking at gear! I don’t know which items I will get for Christmas but I know they have started arriving via UPS! So on Christmas morning I will get to take stock of whatever new gear I receive, and then what loose ends need to be tied up – but I don’t need to wait until then to commit. So let me make this official, my start date NOBO from Campo will be March 21, 2017, pending permit approval which is almost assured since I am going well earlier than the crowds.
I plan to take it easy the first month, and for my pack to be a bit heavy with warmer clothing as I was quite cold at times having started last year on April 1, 2016.
So, it’s official, I’m definitely going to hit the trail – now I have to get my butt in gear and put some miles back on my legs, trying to find some sense of trail legs out there somewhere….
On another note today is my mother’s birthday (may she rest in peace) and I am sure she is looking down pleased with my decision.
